Serum urate level may predict flare risk in patients with gout
Approximately 95% of acute gout episodes requiring treatment occurred in patients who had a serum urate level of at least 6 mg/dL at baseline while 98% occurred in those with a baseline level of at least 5 mg/dL, according to a study using UK Biobank data on 1,773 episodes over a mean follow-up of 8.3 years.

SGLT-2 inhibitors reduced gout flares in patients with diabetes, gout
New users of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors had about half the risk of an ED visit or hospitalization for a gout flare as matched patients taking dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, a cohort analysis found.

Colchicine linked to lower incidence of total knee, hip replacements in patients with chronic coronary artery disease
Compared to placebo, colchicine (0.5 mg once daily) was associated with a 31% lower incidence of total knee replacements and total hip replacements, an exploratory analysis of a randomized controlled trial found.

Separate industry-funded studies find benefit to bempedoic acid as preventive medication, CRP as biomarker
Bempedoic acid reduced cardiovascular (CV) events among patients unwilling or unable to take statins, a trial found, while a review showed that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) was a stronger predictor for risk of future CV events and death than cholesterol in patients on statins.

Hydrochlorothiazide no better than placebo for preventing kidney stone recurrence
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in Switzerland found that patients with a history of recurring kidney stones were no less likely to experience symptomatic or radiologic recurrence with hydrochlorothiazide versus placebo.
