The College notes the passing of James (Jim) Foody III, MD, FACP; Marcus Boyd Shook, MD, MACP; C. Anderson (Andy) Hedberg, MD, MACP; and George Goldsand, MD, MACP.


James (Jim) Foody III, MD, FACP

James (Jim) Foody III, MD, FACP, died on Oct. 25, 2022, at the age of 71.

He served as Governor for the Illinois Northern Chapter from 2008 to 2012.

Dr. Foody completed his internal medicine training at the University of Chicago in 1983 before returning to UChicago Medicine in 1986 spending the next 15 years in several clinical leadership roles, according to an announcement from the chapter.

In 2001, Northwestern University recruited him to serve as the department's associate chair for clinical affairs. Dr. Foody became vice chair in 2004 and served in the role until his retirement in 2019.

Marcus Boyd Shook, MD, MACP

Marcus Boyd Shook, MD, MACP, died on Dec. 23 at the age of 89.

He served as President of the American Society of Internal Medicine from 1996 to 1997.

Dr. Shook practiced internal medicine and hematology and oncology for more than who decades in Oklahoma City, serving as medical director for Central Oklahoma Medical Group and chief of ambulatory care at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He treated patients through his final week at Manos Juntas Free Clinic, which he founded in 1995.

C. Anderson (Andy) Hedberg, MD, MACP

C. Anderson (Andy) Hedberg, MD, MACP, died on Dec. 18 at the age of 87.

He served as Governor for the Illinois Northern/Upstate Chapter from 1992 to 1996. Dr. Hedberg also served as a member of the Board of Regents, including time spent as President from 2005 to 2006, and completed his governance cycle as a member of the Coding and Payment Policy Subcommittee in 2010.

He graduated in 1961 from Cornell University Medical College in New York City before completing his internal medicine residency at New York Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Chicago. Dr. Hedberg then served two years in the Navy before returning in 1968 to Chicago, where he practiced medicine for more than 40 years, spending 17 years at Augustana Hospital and 25 years at Rush University Medical Center and Medical College.

George Goldsand, MD, MACP

George Goldsand, MD, MACP, died on Dec. 22.

He served as Governor for the Alberta Chapter from 1991 to 1995.

Dr. Goldsand received his medical degree in 1959 from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He then studied infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh and returned to Edmonton as one of the first infectious disease subspecialists in Canada and founder of the division of infectious diseases at the University of Alberta. Dr. Goldsand served as the associate dean for postgraduate medical education for 14 years and retired in 2000.
