Faith Fitzgerald, MD, MACP

Faith Fitzgerald, MD, MACP, died on Dec. 3, 2021, at the age of 78.

Prior to serving as an ACP Regent from 2006 to 2012, she was Governor for the College's Northern California Chapter from 1997 to 2001. Dr. Fitzgerald also served as Chair of the Awards Committee from 2009 to 2010 and as Vice Chair of the Education Committee from 1997 to 2000.

For 38 years, she served on the department of internal medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine in Sacramento. Dr. Fitzgerald was residency program director for nearly 20 years and also served as chief of general medicine, vice chair for education, and associate dean for humanities and bioethics.

Edward J. Huth, MD, MACP

Edward J. Huth, MD, MACP, died on Nov. 2, 2021, at the age of 98.

He was appointed Editor of Annals of Internal Medicine in 1971 and in 1977 celebrated the journal's 50th anniversary. Prior to serving in this role, Dr. Huth was Assistant Editor of Annals in 1960 and had become Associate Editor in 1965.

During his 19-year tenure as Editor, he became an expert on style and structure in medical writing and published several books on the subject, including the well-known “How to Write and Publish Papers in the Medical Sciences,” published in 1983. In 1987, Dr. Huth received the Council of Biology Editors' Award for Meritorious Achievement, the organization's highest award.

After retiring as Editor in 1990, he continued to pen articles and books on medical editing and publishing over the next 19 years. A tribute to Dr. Huth, published in June 1990 by Annals and penned by then-ACP Executive Vice President John R. Ball, MD, JD, MACP, said of the Editor, “A man who can write like that deserves the time, in what he calls ‘retirement,’ to write.”

Morton A. Scheinberg, MD, FACP

Morton A. Scheinberg, MD, FACP, died on Sept. 27, 2021, at the age of 76.

He served as Governor for the ACP Brazil Chapter from 2002 to 2006.

Dr. Scheinberg received his medical degree in 1969 from the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Santa Casa de São Paulo, with a PhD in medicine from Boston University and a professorship in immunology from the University of São Paulo.

He became a subspecialist in rheumatology and clinical immunology, working predominately in autoimmunity, therapeutics, and diagnosis. Dr. Scheinberg worked at São Paulo hospitals including Albert Einstein, Abreu Sodré, and Beneficência Portuguesa.

Thomas C. Wood, MD, MACP

Thomas C. Wood, MD, MACP, died on Sept. 25, 2021, just shy of his 83rd birthday.

He served as Governor for the Alaska Chapter of the College from 1985 to 1989. Dr. Wood received the Chapter's first Laureate Award in 1995, as well as its Volunteerism and Community Service Award in 2016.

After graduating from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, he completed his internship in San Francisco before serving as Captain of the Medical Corps for the 4th Missile Battalion from 1966 to 1968 in Richardson, Alaska. Following discharge from the U.S. Army, Dr. Wood completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology and nephrology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In 1971, he set up an internal medicine practice with a partner, treating eight to 10 patients with dialysis in the first year. Two years later, the two physicians started the Alaska Kidney Foundation to help pay for Alaskans with kidney failure to travel to Seattle for transplantation or home dialysis training so they could return to Alaska. After caring for patients with kidney failure for many years, Dr. Wood retired in 2006 and spent the next 14 years volunteering at various medical nonprofit organizations in Alaska.
