2019 Doctor's Dilemma champions named
Team Pennsylvania from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia took home the Osler Cup at this year's Doctor's Dilemma® Championship, held at Internal Medicine Meeting 2019. Doctor's Dilemma brings together some of the brightest residents from around the world in a friendly but highly competitive environment. The competition tests the medical knowledge of up to 60 teams, each representing an ACP chapter. After three days of competition, the winning team is awarded the coveted “Osler Cup” and is granted a place in ACP history. All team members must be active ACP Resident/Fellow Members.
ACP congratulates 2019 Innovation Challenge, Annals Story Slam winners
Congratulations to ACP Innovation Challenge grand prize winner Jonathan Dau, MD, ACP Resident/Fellow Member, for his project “Prescriptions (Rx) for Produce: A Grassroots Medicine, Farm-to-Hospital Initiative.” ACP awarded $20,000 to Dr. Dau, an internal medicine resident at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
ACP held its Innovation Challenge competition at Internal Medicine Meeting 2019. The theme for this year's competition was “Fostering Partnerships between Physicians and Patients.” Audience choice prizes of $5,000 each were presented to David J. Savage, MD, PhD, ACP Resident/Fellow Member, an internal medicine resident, for “A Tool for Seamless Transfer of the Electronic Medical Record,” and Jesse Wang, MD/PhD candidate, ACP Medical Student Member, for “The Digital Scribe.”
Annals Story Slam, which celebrates the human side of medicine by providing an opportunity for participants to share brief stories about being a doctor with an audience, was also held at Internal Medicine Meeting 2019. Annals Story Slam is based on the Annals series “On Being a Doctor.” Horace M. DeLisser, MD, was voted the winner by the audience for his inspiring story “Doing This for 20 Years” about caring for a “dying” patient. All of the Story Slam entries can be viewed online.
National Abstract Competition winners honored
ACP honored the winners of its national abstract competitions during Internal Medicine Meeting 2019. The competitions are open to ACP Early Career Physician Members, ACP Resident/Fellow Members, and Medical Student Members.
Winners of the national abstract competitions, who were on site in Philadelphia to present their winning abstracts, are selected in one of five categories: basic research, clinical research, quality improvement-patient safety, high-value care, and clinical vignette.
ACP Early Career Physician winners, ACP Resident/Fellow Member winners, and ACP Medical Student Member winners are online.
ICYMI: Highlights from ACP Internist Weekly
ACP offers Cost of Care Conversations tools, resources. The new tools help physicians and patients understand the importance of talking about costs of health care and addressing cost issues in the clinical setting. The resources were developed with grant support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A supplement to Annals of Internal Medicine features eight articles and related multimedia content.
ACP joins the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Action Collaborative. The NAM Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic is a national effort to fight the opioid crisis, which kills an estimated 130 Americans every day. As a member of the collaborative, which includes more than 100 organizations such as community organizations, hospital and medical systems, academic institutions, nonprofits, and health professional societies, ACP has committed to sharing information and best practices, coordinating opioid-related efforts, and advancing new initiatives with other members.
