ICD-9 diagnosis codes updated for 2011-2012

The latest annual update of the ICD-9 diagnosis codes is completed and took effect Oct. 1, 2011. Presented below are ICD-9 diagnosis code changes that are likely to be used by internal medicine specialist and subspecialist physicians.

There are three types of code changes in the list below:

• new codes that have not appeared in ICD-9 before,
• revised codes whose descriptions have been altered slightly for clarification or for granularity, and
• deleted codes that are no longer valid for claims use.

For codes not listed here, refer to the 2012 ICD-9 code book, or to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) website. Claims submitted after Oct. 1, 2011 will likely be rejected if they contain deleted codes.

Finally, in a move to ease the transition between ICD-9 and ICD-10, CMS will use a “freeze” on diagnosis coding updates. Beginning Oct. 1, 2012, there will be only limited code updates to the ICD-9 and ICD-10 code sets to capture new technology and diseases. There will be no update to the ICD-9 diagnosis code set on Oct. 1, 2013, at which time the new standard of ICD-10 will go into effect. Regular updates to ICD-10 will begin in 2014.
